🌟 Grade 5 Weekly Update

📚 What We're Learning

Tim's Camp!
Students learned about a variety of social-emotional skills, including respect, communication, teamwork, and how to deal with disappointment. Through discussions and activities, students explored how these skills can help them build positive relationships, work effectively with others, and navigate challenging situations at school and beyond.























🔬 Science

This week: We started our earth systems unit. Students learned about the difference between weather and climate


➗ Math

This week: Students continued learning about place value and expressing numbers using digits and words.



🗣️ ELA

This week: We talking about Orange Shirt Day and students created leaves to go onto a whole school project called The Tree of Reconciliation. Students also worked on a multi paragraph writing task answering the question: What does every child deserve?





🎵 Music

This week: Students started a body percussion unit. Body percussion is the art of creating rhythms, beats, and musical patterns using only the human body instead of traditional instruments




🏃 Physical Education

This week: Students practiced throwing techniques.

💡 At Home

Here are a few ways you can support your child's learning at home this week:

Read: 

  • Students are encouraged to read for 20–30 minutes each night. Reading can include novels, graphic novels, nonfiction books, or magazines. Reading time can also be a great opportunity for parents and caregivers to read with or to their child. Taking turns reading, listening to your child read, or sharing a book together all count!

  • Watch and listen for interesting and descriptive vocabulary while reading.

 Practice:

  • Students can practice their place value skills at home by choosing numbers up to 100,000.000 and writing them in:

    • Standard form – the number written using numerals
    • Expanded form – showing the value of each digit
    • Word form – writing the number using words

    For example:

    Standard: 45,302.618
    Expanded: 40,000 + 5,000 + 300 + 2 + 0.6 + 0.01 + 0.008
    Words: Forty-five thousand, three hundred two and six hundred eighteen thousandths.

  • Students are encouraged to continue practicing their basic math facts. Quick recall of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts helps students solve more complex math problems with confidence and efficiency.

 Talk about: Who came to visit your class this week? What kinds of activities did you do with Tim's camp? What was your favourite activity you did with them? What did you find challenging this week? What did you find easy this week?

  🌟 Grade 5 Weekly Update Hello Grade 5 Families! 👋 We had a wonderful week of learning! Here is a look at what we have been working on in class and some important information for the week ahead. 📚 What Were Learning This week, we focused on what makes each of us unique and how our individual strengths, qualities, and talents can contribute to our class and school community. We explored how qualities such as being encouraging, reliable, determined, and responsible can make a positive difference when we work together. By recognizing and appreciating what each person brings to the team, we are learning that our differences are strengths. Together, we can create a classroom and school community where everyone feels valued and cared for.  What makes a safe/caring classroom? To-do list for parents

  From Mrs. Boldt: Happy Monday! We had a wonderful first day of grade 5!  Students were sent home with a purple folder with some important forms in them. Please fill them out and send them back to me. They were also sent home with brown paper bag. They are allowed to bring 1-3 things from home to share with the class. It can be something they like, a special photograph, or anything that helps the rest of the class get to know them better. This activity is totally optional so if your child does not want to participate that is okay :) From Mrs. Brinson: IMPORTANT ACTION: TO-DO LIST FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS All forms are now available. Please log in to your MyCBE account and complete the following forms: Demographic Verification Form Even if nothing has changed (phone numbers, email addresses, etc.), you must submit this form .
